Stop Pathrakadavu hydro-electric project

by epgadmin

Letter Submitted before the Hon: Chairman, Kerala Legislative committee for water, electricity, environment & social welfare.

Pathrakadavu Hydro- electric power project is not recommended in larger sense based on the following facts:

  1. The biodiversity of Pathrakadavu project site is precious, which can not be valued in monitory terms.
  2. It is the place for many endemic and endangered species of flora and fauna.
  3. It is part and parcel of silent Valley national park ecology
  4. The project will invite more and more depletion of natural habitats in and around the project site.
  5. The loss incurred can not be compensated through proposed project recommendations
  6. River is a natural phenomenon. Blocking the water by making a dam is not a scientific management as it will alter the whole aquatic and related ecosystems.
  7. The implications by implementing the project are deterrent in different dimensions such as social, economical and ecological.
  8. By means of money, it is not possible compensating the ill-effects caused by the project.
  9. It is known that the project is submitted to the central government without following proper procedures, for example, not convening proper public hearing.
  10. We have to take into account the status of such projects in Kerala, their cost- result –benefit before starting the project.
  11. The alternate power generation methods with lesser damages like taping wind, solar, tide energy can be thought.
  12. Rectifying / repairing the present power projects and effective management can solve present power crisis. Instead of constructing new dam, present dams like Malampuzha can be used for power generation.
