Indiscriminate use of Karate (Lambda-Cyhalothrin)

by epgadmin

Ecological Protection Group in their recent studies found out that, Karate (Lambda-Cyhalothrin) - a dangerous insecticide- 7 times dangerous than infamous Endosulfan being indiscriminately used all over India in Vegetables and cash crops. Vegetable (Brinjal, Melon, tomatoes, chillies, onions, bhindi. ground nut, chickpea) .This dangerous chemical is also used widely in Paddy cultivation.

Studies challenge the benign image of pyrethroid insecticides. In the April 2005 Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (ET&C), the team reported that permethrin's LC50 was 60 to 110 parts per billion (ppb), depending on how much organic carbon the sediment contained. The LC50 for the remaining pyrethroids was far lower, indicating greater toxicity. The most toxic: lambda-cyhalothrin and bifenthrin, which have an LC50 of 2 to 6 ppb.

The crustaceans' growth was significantly retarded at concentrations just one-third of a pyrethroid's LC50.

As its name suggests (karate), this insecticides kills not only the harmful pest but it eradicates all kinds of lifeforms, including the friendly organisms in the areas where it is applied thereby causing huge and irreparable damage to the agriculture ecology.

There is not enough studies done in Humans regarding this insecticide, lambda-cyhalothrin, even though it causes abdominal pain, allergic manifestations, sensation of tingling and numbness, disturbance to the nervous system with tremors, ataxia weakness of limb and convulsions, and death from respiratory depression.
